The National Communications Authority (NCA) has stepped in to calm tensions between the Ministry of Communications and MultiChoice Ghana over the ongoing debate on DSTV subscription prices, clarifying that final decisions will be made after the conclusion of a 14-day stakeholder engagement.
The clarification comes after a heated exchange between Communications Minister Sam George and MultiChoice Ghana. At a press conference last Friday, the Minister announced that MultiChoice had “finally agreed” to reduce subscription fees following government pressure. Hours later, however, MultiChoice issued a counter-statement, denying that any such agreement had been reached and stressing that only the yet-to-be-formed stakeholder committee could determine any changes in pricing.
The public rebuttal marked the second time in recent weeks that MultiChoice has contradicted the Minister’s statements, prompting public concern and debate. Many Ghanaians on social media urged the Minister to allow the regulator to handle the matter to avoid further embarrassment.

In a statement released on Saturday, September 6, 2025, the NCA confirmed that MultiChoice had responded to its notice of intention to suspend their authorisation and had submitted their pricing model as requested. The regulator also clarified three key points from its engagement with the pay-TV operator:
- Commitment to the Stakeholder Committee: MultiChoice Ghana has agreed to the directive from the Minister to establish a stakeholder committee to evaluate DSTV pricing in Ghana and confirmed its readiness to fully participate in the process.
- Outcome Will Be Determined by Committee: Any decision regarding subscription fees will be based on the findings and conclusions of the committee at the end of its work.
- Respect for Due Process: MultiChoice assured the regulator that it will respect due process, Ghanaian laws, and the interests of the Ghanaian public.
The first meeting of the committee, which will be chaired by the Minister and include representatives from the NCA, MultiChoice Ghana, MultiChoice Africa, and other key stakeholders, is scheduled for Monday, September 8, 2025.
The NCA emphasized that it will provide further updates as the committee begins its work, urging the public to allow the process to unfold.
The intervention is expected to cool the rising tensions between government and the pay-TV operator, while also assuring consumers that their concerns about high subscription costs are being addressed through due process.
