NASPA Suspends GH¢60 Allowance Deduction After Public Backlash
The National Service Personnel Association (NASPA) has suspended its contract with Zeus Atlas Limited for the implementation of its capacity-building programme following concerns over the deduction of GH¢60 from the allowances of national service personnel.
Speaking at a press conference at the National Service Authority headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, July 21, NASPA President Abdul Wahab Bala Mohammed said the decision followed a directive from the Minister for Youth, Employment and Development, George Opare Addo, after widespread concerns were raised by service personnel over the deductions.
Mr Mohammed explained that although the association believed the programme would improve the employability of national service personnel, it had acknowledged that the financial commitment required was beyond the means of many personnel.
“Due to concerns regarding the deductions and the level of consultations, we took our time to engage our newly elected executives and received feedback from service personnel, as well as carefully reviewed the issues raised.
“In response to the feedback, the capacity-building programme is hereby suspended pending a comprehensive review of the programme for decisive action to be taken. This is in line with our minister of youth, employment and development, George Opare Addo's, directive. We welcome this directive wholeheartedly.”
He assured national service personnel that no deductions would be made from their allowances to fund the programme.
“We wish to assure national service personnel that there will be no deductions of allowances for capacity training," he said.
