Nana Yaa Jantuah Made A Mistake Accepting NPP’s Petition – Mustapha Gbande
Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, says Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah should not have accepted the petition presented by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during its “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration.
According to him, the petition, which accused the government of political persecution, selective justice and the misuse of state institutions, will not receive any action from the Mahama administration.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Gbande argued that the NPP’s claim that Ghana’s democracy is under threat is unfounded.
He said the successful organisation of the protest itself is evidence that the country’s democratic system remains intact.
“I don’t know if the petition has reached President Mahama, but Nana Yaa Jantuah even made a mistake taking it,” he said.
The Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency explained that the NPP’s ability to organise a nationwide demonstration, with the support and protection of the security agencies, contradicts claims that democratic freedoms are being suppressed.
Mr Gbande’s comments follow the NPP’s submission of petitions to the Supreme Court and the Jubilee House on Thursday, August 6, as part of its “Democracy Under Attack” protest.
The party accused the government of using state institutions to target political opponents and called attention to what it described as threats to Ghana’s democratic governance.
However, Mr Gbande maintained that the government remains focused on delivering on its mandate and improving the lives of Ghanaians rather than being distracted by opposition protests.
He questioned how the opposition could claim democracy was under threat when it was able to mobilise supporters and hold a public demonstration without interference.
Mr Gbande argued that the NPP’s own demonstration contradicts claims that Ghana’s democracy is under threat.
“Because they claim democracy is under attack, yet it is this same democracy that allowed you to embark on the demonstration as a constitutional right,” he said.
He commended the Ghana Police Service for providing security during the protest, saying the peaceful organisation of the event showed that democratic freedoms were being protected.
“The police gave the needed security,” he stated.
Mr Gbande also dismissed claims that the demonstration was disrupted by external forces, insisting that the only confrontations recorded during the procession involved some NPP supporters.
“It was among your own supporters we saw people fighting,” he said.
In a lighter remark, he said he would have shown goodwill to the protesters if he had been present at the demonstration.
“If we were in Accra, I would have even bought food for them because they are our brothers,” he added.
The NPP’s “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration saw thousands of party supporters march through parts of Accra to protest what they described as threats to Ghana’s democratic governance.
