My Father’s funeral Date Came From Otumfuo, Not Me — Adwoa Safo
Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo has dismissed claims that she influenced the date for her late father’s funeral, stating that the date was approved by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
According to her, the arrangements for the burial followed extensive consultations with the Manhyia Palace because of her father’s royal background in the Ashanti Region.
Her comments come after her brother, Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena I, head of the Safo family and leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana, announced that disagreements over the funeral arrangements had not been resolved, making it difficult to confirm a burial date.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, July 28, Sarah Adwoa Safo explained that preparations for the funeral began in October after the family observed the 40-day rites for her late father.
She said the family could not have proceeded with the arrangements without seeking the guidance and approval of the Asantehene due to her father’s status as a member of a royal family.
“My father is from a royal background from the Ashanti Region, and so for a royal of his calibre, we couldn’t have done anything without consulting the King of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II,” she said.
She explained that after the consultations, the Asantehene approved a date after being satisfied with the steps taken by the family.
“We went back and forth from the palace trying to seek clearance, getting direction and advice on how to proceed. Finally, the King agreed that we had put a number of things in place and approved a date for us,” she stated.
She stressed that the date under contention was not her personal decision but one that came from the Manhyia Palace.
“I want to state again, and to the hearing of those who have pretended they did not hear, that that date is not my date. That date is from the palace,” she said.
She added that anyone seeking to challenge the date should direct their concerns to the authority that approved it.
“So, if you seek to change it, go and challenge that authority in the Ashanti Kingdom that you don’t want your father to be buried on that date,” she added.
