MTN One TV Launched to Give Ghanaian Creators Global Reach
MTN Ghana has launched MTN One TV, a Pan-African video streaming platform designed to provide audiences with convenient access to African entertainment while creating new opportunities for Ghanaian content creators.
The platform offers local movies, series, live channels and international programming, with flexible viewing options that allow customers to access entertainment on the go and across devices.
Speaking at the launch, MTN Chief Digital Officer Ibrahim Misto said the platform forms part of the company’s broader transition from a traditional telecommunications provider into a digital platform business connecting people, businesses and creative ecosystems.
He said Ghana was home to significant creative talent, with filmmakers, actors, producers, writers, musicians and content creators producing stories that reflect the country’s identity.
“Yet, one of the biggest opportunities before us is to ensure that these stories have the platforms and audiences they deserve. This is where MTN One TV comes in,” he said.
According to him, MTN One TV brings together local storytelling, live channels, international programming and flexible viewing options, while creating opportunities to connect content creators, content owners, broadcasters, advertisers and audiences within a stronger digital entertainment ecosystem.
Mr Misto said MTN would partner with producers and content owners to expand the reach of Ghanaian film and television, make local content easier to discover and give emerging talents greater visibility.
He added that a stronger digital content ecosystem could generate new revenue streams for professionals across the creative value chain, including writers, directors, actors, editors, technicians and production crews.
“We are telling them to monetise on that platform because if they are there and MTN helps them to scale, they would win, Ghana wins, and so we do as well,” he said.
The MTN Chief Digital Officer also emphasised the cultural significance of the platform, noting that Ghanaian stories carry the country’s history, languages, traditions and values.
He said giving local content a stronger presence in the digital space would help preserve Ghana’s cultural identity while ensuring that future generations remain connected to stories that define the country.
The launch forms part of MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary celebrations under the theme “30 Years of Progress, Powered by You".
Mr Misto said MTN had evolved over the past three decades from a telecommunications company focused mainly on voice and data services into a platform business supporting businesses, startups and wider ecosystems.
“Today, we are a platform business connecting businesses, startups, whole ecosystems, and helping them scale and then thrive,” he said.
He described the launch of MTN One TV as an invitation to the creative industry to collaborate with the company to identify challenges, explore opportunities and develop partnerships that deliver value to both creators and audiences.
He stressed that the future of Ghana’s creative industry would depend on collaboration among content creators, broadcasters, telecommunications companies, technology providers, regulators and investors.
For his part, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Yussif Issaka Jajah commended MTN Ghana for creating the platform and choosing a conversation focused on “Empowering Ghana’s Creative Industry through Collaboration and Digital Innovation".
He said the initiative was timely, particularly at a time when Ghana was seeking to transform its cultural and creative resources into sustainable economic opportunities.
The Deputy Minister recalled Ghana’s rich history of storytelling through television, film and other forms of creative expression, noting that the country’s stories and culture had travelled beyond its borders but the economic benefits had not always returned to the creators.
He said the launch of MTN One TV represented an important step towards ensuring that Ghanaian stories reach wider audiences while creating greater value for the creators, custodians and communities behind them.
“Today we are taking another important step towards a future where Ghanaian stories can travel further, reach wider audiences and create greater value, while ensuring that the creators, custodians and communities behind those stories are not left behind,” he said.
Mr Jajah also commended MTN Ghana for its longstanding contribution to the creative economy, including support for musicians, festivals and other cultural initiatives.
He described MTN One TV as a bold move to provide Ghanaian content with a dedicated home and give creators a platform capable of reaching audiences beyond Ghana.
He assured filmmakers and content creators that the government remained committed to working with industry players, development partners, technology companies and other stakeholders to create an environment where Ghanaian creativity could thrive.
He said the government was strengthening discussions around intellectual property, local content quotas and training to ensure Ghanaian films and other creative works meet international standards.
The deputy minister, however, stressed that the government alone could not transform the creative industry.
“We need collaborations among telephone companies, producers, actors, regulators and digital platforms,” he said.
He urged industry players to use technology to tell Ghanaian stories more boldly and profitably.
“Today, technology has given us a camera; technology has given us the data and screen. Let us use them to tell our stories boldly and profitably,” he added.
Mr Jajah encouraged stakeholders to identify challenges within the creative industry, celebrate progress and develop practical solutions that could be implemented.
He expressed hope that MTN One TV would open new markets for Ghanaian content, create opportunities for creators and help Ghanaian stories reach audiences wherever in the world they are watching.
