Minority Did The Right Thing to Recuse Themselves From Vetting- Franklin Cudjoe

The Founding President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has commended the minority in Parliament for their decision to recuse themselves from the ministerial vetting process following the Speaker’s directive for a reconstitution of the Appointments Committee.

Cudjoe emphasised that the move, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, was a show of respect for Speaker Alban Bagbin’s authority and a step toward upholding parliamentary order.

“I think the minority did the right thing to recuse themselves from the vetting. They are respecting the Speaker’s directive that the Appointments Committee be reconstituted immediately following the suspension of four members. That is Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin’s mark of leadership I referred to,” Cudjoe stated in a Facebook post on Friday.

The decision to boycott the vetting process stemmed from Afenyo-Markin’s insistence on consulting with the Speaker regarding the committee’s restructuring before proceeding. This position was raised during discussions with Committee Chairman Bernard Ahiafor.

However, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga informed members that the Speaker had rescheduled the meeting for Monday, February 3, 2025, citing his unavailability at the time.

The minority’s action has sparked discussions on parliamentary discipline and adherence to procedural directives, with some stakeholders praising the move as a principled stance in support of parliamentary integrity.
