Minority Demands Arrests Over ‘Unlawful’ Shutdown of Tema NHIS Office

The Minority in Parliament has strongly condemned the reported locking of the Tema Central office of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by individuals described as political party executives, calling the action unlawful and a direct threat to public order and essential healthcare delivery.

In a press statement, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Committee on Health, Hon. Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie, described the development as an unacceptable obstruction of a critical public institution that serves vulnerable citizens across the country.

He stressed that the NHIS must never be used as a tool in partisan disputes, warning that the disruption of services undermines both governance and public trust.

The Minority is demanding the immediate arrest of all individuals directly involved in the incident, urging law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and decisively in accordance with Ghana’s laws.

According to Dr Afriyie, failure to take firm action would set a dangerous precedent, emboldening political actors to interfere with public institutions without consequence.

He cautioned that such inaction would weaken state authority and erode public confidence in governance.

The statement emphasised that essential health services must never be disrupted for political advantage, particularly when ordinary citizens depend on the NHIS for registration, renewals, and claims processing.

The minority warned that patients and beneficiaries should not be made to suffer because of political disagreements, insisting that access to healthcare must remain uninterrupted.

The Minority is also calling for the swift reopening of the Tema Central NHIS office and the full restoration of its operations to ensure that the public can continue accessing services without delay.

Dr Afriyie stressed that Parliament’s Minority will not remain silent while public health infrastructure is compromised, insisting that accountability must be immediate and visible.

“The rule of law must prevail,” the statement concluded, underscoring the Minority’s demand for decisive action to protect public institutions and safeguard access to healthcare.
