Minority Declares War on New Taxes: “We Will Resist Any Attempt to Burden Ghanaians”

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has issued a strong warning that it will vehemently oppose any attempt by the Mahama-led administration to introduce new taxes or increase existing ones, arguing that such measures will only worsen the plight of struggling Ghanaians.

At a press conference on Monday, March 3, 2025, former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam lambasted the government’s ambitious GH¢200 billion tax revenue target, calling it unrealistic given the current economic conditions.

Dr. Amin Adam accused the Mahama administration of hypocrisy, recalling how it had previously criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for its taxation policies.

“This is how they intend to tax Ghanaians to collect GH¢200 billion in tax revenues this year. This same government accused us of overtaxing the people when, by the end of 2024, the NPP administration had collected GH¢152.9 billion—raising the tax-to-GDP ratio to 17%, up from Mahama’s 13% in 2016. How do you now expect to raise GH¢200 billion in a broken economy?” he questioned.

The former minister emphasized that excessive taxation would stifle economic growth, discourage private sector investment, and deepen the financial struggles of ordinary Ghanaians.

Dr. Amin Adam made it clear that the Minority Caucus will stand with Ghanaians in rejecting any tax increases, warning that such policies would cripple businesses and worsen unemployment.

“We, the Mighty Minority, will join the people of Ghana to resist any attempt to smuggle in new taxes or increase existing ones. We owe it a duty to hold this government accountable and protect the livelihoods of our citizens,” he declared.

The debate over taxation is set to intensify in Parliament, as the opposition gears up for a fierce battle to block any tax hikes that could further burden an already struggling population.
