Michael Kpakpo Allotey confirmed as new Accra Mayor with unanimous vote

Michael Kpakpo Allotey has been unanimously confirmed as the new Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), receiving 100% of votes cast by Assembly Members in a rousing show of support on Tuesday.

The confirmation, conducted by the Electoral Commission during a Special General Assembly Meeting at Accra City Hall, saw Mr Allotey sweep all 30 valid votes—far surpassing the two-thirds threshold required under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).

The chamber erupted into celebrations marked by drumming, singing, and cheers from Assembly Members, party executives, traditional leaders, and residents who had gathered to witness the endorsement.

“This is the centre of Greater Accra,” declared Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, who supervised the election. She urged the Assembly to rise above partisanship and back the president’s nominee to deliver development for the capital.

In his maiden address as mayor, an emotional Allotey expressed profound gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the appointment.

“I thank the President for entrusting me, a young man from North Kaneshie, with this responsibility. It is an honour I do not take lightly,” he said.

Pledging to build on the foundation laid by his predecessors, Mr Allotey declared boldly:

“I now hold the baton as mayor of Accra. My predecessor has done her part, but today, it’s my turn. If I have any misunderstandings, I can seek advice from the many who have come before me, so there is no window for failure.”

Echoing the vision of the Mahama administration, he proclaimed:

“We are going to reset Accra—starting now.”
“What God cannot do does not exist,” he added, drawing cheers from the audience.

Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey I, a Council of State member and Chair of the Assembly’s Economic and Social Development Committee, challenged the new mayor to lead with vision and discipline. He highlighted sanitation, urban congestion, housing, youth unemployment, and social equity as top areas needing urgent attention and innovation.

Mr Allotey, an experienced entrepreneur and logistics expert, comes into the role with over a decade in the private sector, including leadership positions in real estate, petroleum, and transport management.

He is the former CEO of Our God Is Good Real Estate and has held executive roles at EXOLUBE, KYG Consultancy, and DIMD Ghana, where he implemented cost-cutting reforms.

Within the NDC, he has served in multiple roles, most recently as Director of Operations for the party in the Okaikwei South Constituency.

As he takes the reins of Accra, expectations are high that his blend of youthful energy, private sector experience, and political grounding will inject renewed momentum into the city’s development agenda.
