The Kwabenya Circuit Court has sentenced a 58-year-old mason, Joshua Bledi, to 10 years’ imprisonment for committing incest with his 17-year-old daughter, resulting in her pregnancy.
Bledi pleaded guilty to the offence and admitted to the facts as narrated by the prosecution. In his plea for leniency, he asked the court to have mercy on him.
Presiding over the case, the court took into account Bledi’s age, the premeditated nature of the offence, and his decision not to waste judicial time by pleading guilty. However, the court stressed the gravity of the crime, noting its cultural and moral abomination, before imposing the custodial sentence.

Prosecutor Chief Inspector Gershon Togbe Achondo told the court that incest cases were becoming increasingly common and urged a harsh sentence to serve as a deterrent to others.
According to the prosecution, the victim, a hairdresser apprentice and mother of a seven-month-old baby, went into labour at the Ga East Hospital. She encountered difficulties settling her medical bills until the hospital’s Social Welfare Department intervened and waived the costs.
Further enquiries by a social welfare officer revealed that the victim’s father was responsible for her pregnancy. She disclosed that Bledi had been having repeated sexual intercourse with her since her mother instructed her to live with him.
Following a report to the Kwabenya Domestic Violence and Victims’ Support Unit (DOVVSU), a medical examination was conducted, and Bledi was subsequently arrested.
Meanwhile, the Abuse Relief Corps, a non-profit organisation, has stepped in to support the teenage mother and her baby.
