Man Busted with Over 400 Boxes of Tramadol in Tamale

The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested a 53-year-old man, Alhaji Abdulai Sayuti, for the unlawful possession and distribution of restricted pharmaceutical drugs in Tamale.

The arrest was made on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at around 1:30 p.m. following an intelligence-led operation conducted at Victory Cinema near Aboabo, where the suspect runs an over-the-counter (OTC) chemical shop.

According to a police statement, an initial search at the shop uncovered a significant stash of controlled substances, including 368 blisters of tramadol (120 mg) and 298 blisters of tramaking (120 mg), both classified as powerful opioids under Ghanaian drug laws.

The operation extended to the suspect’s residence in Fuo, another suburb of Tamale, where police discovered a hidden warehouse stocked with a staggering 447 boxes of tramadol and 11 boxes of tramaking—marking one of the largest single seizures of illicit pharmaceutical drugs in the region’s recent history.

Alhaji Sayuti was arraigned before court on Wednesday, July 16, where he pleaded guilty to charges of possessing restricted drugs and engaging in unauthorised sale. However, proceedings were interrupted when the accused reportedly collapsed in court and had to be rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) for emergency medical attention.

He has since been remanded into prison custody and is expected to reappear in court on Monday, July 21, 2025.

Police say investigations are still ongoing to determine the source and distribution network of the drugs. Authorities have also urged the public to support efforts to clamp down on the illicit pharmaceutical trade, which continues to pose a major threat to public health and safety in Ghana.
