Mamprugu Chiefs Fume Over Nalerigu Curfew, Demand Apology and Justice for Victims

The Mamprusi Traditional Council has issued a fiery statement condemning the government’s imposition of a curfew on Nalerigu and its surrounding areas, describing it as arbitrary, unjustified, and a blatant show of disrespect toward the Nayiri, the traditional overlord of Mamprugu.

In the statement released on Monday, July 28, 2025, the Council demanded:

  • Immediate lifting of the curfew,
  • A full and transparent investigation into the recent killings at Nalerigu Senior High School, and
  • An unreserved apology to the Nayiri and the people of Mamprugu for what it termed a gross disregard for traditional authority.

The government’s decision followed the July 27 killing of two students by unidentified gunmen, prompting a dusk-to-dawn curfew from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Speculation links the incident to the protracted Bawku chieftaincy conflict, though no motive has been officially confirmed.

However, the Nayiri Palace insists that Nalerigu remains calm and stable, rendering the curfew both unnecessary and harmful.

“Mamprugu remains firmly committed to constitutional rule,” the statement declared.
“The Palace expresses its deep displeasure and dismay at the arbitrary and unjustified manner in which this curfew has been imposed.”

The Council accused the government of failing to consult local leaders and wrongfully equating the peace in Mamprugu with the instability in Bawku.

“It is troubling that the government continues to pursue a misguided policy of equating the longstanding conflict in Bawku with the peace and stability in Mamprugu,” the Palace warned.

The statement also blasted the government’s justification—that the curfew was needed to facilitate the evacuation of students—as “unconvincing and unfortunate.”

The Nayiri and his Council warned that such unilateral and reactive security decisions undermine peace-building efforts, urging instead for collaborative engagement and mutual respect.
