Majority Caucus Calls For Cancellation Of Ayawaso East Primary Over Vote-Buying Allegations
The Majority Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament has called for the immediate cancellation of the party’s recent parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East constituency, following allegations of widespread vote buying and inducement.
In a statement dated February 8, 2026, and signed by Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business Mahama Ayariga, the caucus said it had become aware of “widely circulated allegations of vote buying” in the just-ended primaries.
“The caucus wishes to strongly condemn these developments against the background of the agenda to reset the politics of this country,” the statement said.

According to the Majority Caucus, the allegations undermine the credibility of the party’s internal democratic processes and run contrary to its commitment to ethical political conduct. The group said it decided after extensive deliberations among its core and extended leadership.
As part of its recommendations, the caucus called on the party’s Functional Executive Committee to annul the Ayawaso East primary and organise a fresh contest. It also proposed strict sanctions for candidates found culpable.
“That the primary of the NDC organised in the Ayawaso East Constituency be annulled immediately,” the statement said.
“Any candidate who has been established to have engaged in unethical conduct should be banned from participating in the subsequent primary.”
The probe follows widespread controversy surrounding the primaries, after reports emerged that Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed allegedly distributed items, including 32-inch television sets and boiled eggs, to delegates during the voting process.
Party insiders and delegates claim the items were perceived as inducements and may have influenced voting patterns, ultimately contributing to his victory in the contest.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor has also announced investigations into similar vote-buying allegations involving both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The NDC leadership has, in recent days, constituted a three-member committee to probe the allegations in Ayawaso East and recommend reforms to curb inducement in future contests.
The committee is expected to submit its report by February 10, 2026.
The Majority Caucus said its position aligns with the party’s broader agenda to restore public confidence in Ghana’s democratic institutions.
“The NDC Majority Caucus remains committed to restoring integrity to our politics,” the statement added.
