In a major boost to Ghana’s job creation efforts, former President John Mahama has launched the National Apprenticeship Programme, aimed at equipping more than 500,000 young Ghanaians with employable skills over the next five years.
Launched at the University for Development Studies in Tamale, the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to combat youth unemployment by offering free technical and vocational training in areas such as tailoring, welding, carpentry, hairdressing, and auto mechanics.

Addressing a crowd of students and artisans, President Mahama said the programme will directly tackle joblessness by giving young people the skills and support needed to start their own businesses or secure employment.
“Every apprentice will receive monthly stipends and transport allowances, and at the end of their training, they will be given certificates and startup capital to help launch their businesses,” Mahama announced.
The programme, he added, is designed not only to provide training but to guarantee economic opportunities. Graduates will be supported with tools, equipment, and financial assistance to begin work immediately after completing the programme.
At least 45% of beneficiaries will be women, and 5% reserved for persons with disabilities, making the programme one of the most inclusive job creation schemes in Ghana’s history. Vulnerable and marginalised groups will also receive special consideration.
To ensure sustainability, Mahama revealed that the initiative is fully funded with GHS300 million allocated in the 2025 budget. “This is not a one-off promise. This is a serious, long-term investment in job creation,” he said.
The National Apprenticeship Programme is expected to reduce unemployment, expand Ghana’s skilled labour force, and boost entrepreneurship across the country.
