Mahama Warns Ministers: No Protection for Scandals, Party and Presidency Will Not Shield Offenders

President John Dramani Mahama has issued a firm and uncompromising warning to his ministers that any involvement in scandal or wrongdoing will attract swift and severe consequences, with no protection from the presidency or the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The warning was confirmed by the General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, during an interview on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, where he said the president’s message to his cabinet was clear, direct, and unequivocal.

“I can confirm that 100%, and I can also confirm that not only has he done that, but the party has also solidly stood behind him. Even in cabinet, we are fully behind him in terms of doing that,” Mr Kwetey stated.

President Mahama has repeatedly pledged to restore discipline, accountability, and integrity in public office, amid growing public concern over corruption and governance standards. His warning to ministers, according to party leadership, forms part of a broader effort to signal a zero-tolerance approach to scandals and to assure Ghanaians that wrongdoing within government will attract consequences, regardless of political affiliation or status.

Mr Kwetey explained that the president made it explicitly clear to ministers that neither the presidency nor the party would intervene to shield anyone whose actions bring disrepute to the government.

“If you are a member of government, and the leader of the government is telling you in plain language that he is not going to tolerate any wrong thing, and you also see the leaders of the party backing him, then it means that at all levels, father and mother are in one alignment. You had better do what is right,” he said.

According to the NDC General Secretary, the firm posture adopted by President Mahama and supported by the party helps explain what he described as the relative absence of major scandals in government so far.

“That’s why you can go through a whole year and you hardly can talk about scandals, because every single person knows that if you do that, you are on your own. The party is not shielding you. The presidency is not shielding you,” Mr Kwetey added.

Pressed on whether ministers would be dismissed if implicated in wrongdoing, Mr Kwetey was emphatic that consequences would follow without delay.

“Absolutely, and you will be dealt with,” he said.

He clarified that being “dealt with” means facing the full rigours of due process, including prosecution, without political interference.

“If what you do is wrong, you have to face due process. If you have to be taken to court, you’ll be taken to court. Nobody is shielding you. If you have to be jailed, you’re going to be jailed,” he stated.

Mr Kwetey said the stance reflects a deliberate effort to break away from a political culture in which parties protect their own at the expense of accountability and the national interest.

“A situation where NDC has come, therefore NDC must shield itself and must protect people who are doing wrong; that must be a thing of the past. The country’s interest must remain paramount,” he stressed.

Asked how cabinet ministers received the president’s warning, Mr Kwetey said there was no doubt about the seriousness of the message.

“I think they clearly do know that the president means every bit of what he said,” he noted.

He revealed that President Mahama even reinforced the warning with humour, while leaving no room for misinterpretation.

“The president actually tells them, jokingly, that once you hit trouble, don’t even bother calling, because your call will not be picked up. What is to be done will be done,” Mr Kwetey disclosed.

The warning, backed openly by party leadership, is being seen as a strong signal to the public that the Mahama administration intends to prioritise accountability and ethical governance, as it seeks to rebuild public trust and distance itself from past perceptions of political interference in corruption-related cases.
