Mahama Warns Appointees: Public Office Is Not for Personal Gain
President John Dramani Mahama has issued a stern reminder to his appointees that public office must never be used for personal enrichment.
As part of efforts to instill integrity and accountability in governance, the president unveiled a new Code of Conduct on Tuesday, May 6, outlining clear expectations for ethical behaviour.
The Code instructs all appointees to promptly declare any potential conflicts of interest and to avoid misusing their positions for private benefit. It forms a central pillar of the government’s broader agenda to promote professionalism, civility, and ethical leadership across state institutions.

“Protect government property, prevent waste and prudently apply public resources to achieve developmental goals,” the Code directs, adding, “Refrain from using public office for personal gain and promptly disclose any potential conflict of interest situation that may arise.”
Appointees are also urged to express their opinions honestly, without fear or favour, in ways that advance national productivity and harmony. The document further calls for a culture of mutual respect and fairness, with officials expected to treat all citizens, colleagues, and stakeholders with dignity.
The launch of the Code of Conduct comes just a day before the president is expected to deliver a national broadcast marking 120 days of his administration and updating citizens on the progress of key manifesto pledges.
