Mahama to African Leaders: Youth Are Tired of Empty Promises—Act Now

President John Dramani Mahama has issued a powerful call to African leaders to match their democratic rhetoric with concrete action, warning that the continent’s youth are fast losing patience with unfulfilled commitments.

Speaking at the 13th High-Level Dialogue on Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance in Africa on Tuesday, July 29, Mahama urged governments to respond to the growing frustration among citizens, particularly young people, with transformative leadership and inclusive development.

“This dialogue cannot afford to become another ceremonial event filled with lofty speeches but void of action. Our citizens are watching and waiting,” he stated.

Held under the theme “Justice, Right, Reparation, and State Building,” the high-level forum brought together heads of state, policy experts, civil society leaders, and pan-African institutions to confront Africa’s structural governance deficits.

Mahama, who chairs the Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa, emphasized the urgency of the moment, saying Africa’s youth—who make up the majority of the population—are not demanding handouts, but fairness, opportunity, and a stake in the continent’s future.

“They are growing increasingly impatient. They are not asking for charity; they demand fairness, they demand opportunity, and they demand a stake in our continent’s future.”

He noted that while the dialogue’s theme captured the essence of the continent’s development challenges, its true value lies in whether it leads to real reforms—from strengthening institutions and upholding human rights to ensuring peace and accountability.

Mahama stressed that the credibility of leadership now depends on visible impact rather than grand declarations:

“We must rise to the occasion not with rhetoric, but with clear action.”
