Mahama Pledges to Boost Food Production Amid USAID Suspension

President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to scale up food production in Ghana as part of efforts to cushion the country against the economic impact of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) suspension.

This follows the decision by former U.S. President Donald Trump to halt USAID operations, citing concerns over the use of American taxpayers’ money for foreign aid.

The move is expected to have far-reaching economic effects across Africa, with Ghana facing a revenue shortfall of $156 million.

Out of the total shortfall, $78.2 million was earmarked for critical health programs, including malaria prevention, maternal and child health, family planning, and HIV/AIDS interventions. The sudden funding gap has raised concerns over Ghana’s ability to sustain these essential services.

Speaking at a town hall forum during the Munich Security Conference in Germany on Friday, President Mahama acknowledged the challenges posed by the USAID withdrawal.

However, he stressed the need for Africans to take charge of their economic future by prioritising local food production and seeking alternative funding sources.

“This is a wake-up call for us to build a more resilient economy. We must invest in food production, strengthen local industries, and ensure that we are not overly dependent on foreign aid,” Mahama stated.

He assured Ghanaians that his administration would implement measures to expand agricultural output, increase domestic food supply, and protect vulnerable communities from the economic shock of the USAID suspension.

With Ghana and other African nations now forced to navigate the loss of USAID funding, the government’s next steps will be closely watched. Mahama’s push for agricultural self-sufficiency could redefine Ghana’s economic strategy in the coming years, ensuring long-term sustainability beyond foreign aid.
