Maame Tiwaa of Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo Dead at 62

Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician Maame Tiwaa, famed for her unmistakable voice and more than four decades of ministry with Yaw Sarpong and the Asomafo, has passed away.

She died in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025, after weeks of battling illness.

Her death marks the end of an era for Ghanaian gospel music. To many, Maame Tiwaa was not merely a backing vocalist; she was the soul of the Asomafo harmony, a powerful presence whose voice shaped the soundtrack of countless Christian homes.

Confirming her passing, her long-time manager, Ashis, paid tribute to her extraordinary dedication, describing her as someone whose loyalty and consistency in the group were “unmatched and rare” in today’s creative industry.

For over forty years, her harmonies strengthened Yaw Sarpong’s lead vocals, helping create timeless classics that still dominate worship sessions, live ministrations, and gospel playlists across the country.

Whether on the live stage or in the studio, her delivery remained remarkably consistent, warm, commanding, and instantly recognisable.

Despite her decades of excellence, many industry watchers have long argued that recognition for her contributions came far too late. Her first major award nomination earlier this year was celebrated by fans and colleagues as overdue but deeply deserved – a long-awaited honour for a woman who carried Ghana’s gospel tradition with grace.

Born in Domeabra in the Ahafo Region, Maame Tiwaa began singing at age 10. Her gift eventually led her to Reverend Yaw Sarpong, who formed the Asomafo Band and nurtured Tiwaa into one of the most respected and enduring voices in the country’s gospel landscape.

Their partnership spanning decades, albums, and countless worship stages remains one of the most iconic collaborations in Ghanaian gospel history.

Her passing has stirred widespread sorrow within the gospel fraternity. Colleagues and fans alike describe her as a symbol of humility, spirituality, and a disappearing era of ministry-driven music defined by live instrumentation and group performance.

More tributes are expected from industry players as funeral arrangements are prepared.
