Local Government Service Workers’ Union Declines to Join CLOGSAG Strike

The Local Government Service Workers’ Union (LGSWU) has disassociated itself from the ongoing strike initiated by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG).

The strike, which began on Thursday, February 20, 2025, is in protest against the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as the Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry. CLOGSAG argues that the appointment is politically motivated and violates a Supreme Court ruling that bars civil servants from active partisan politics.

CLOGSAG’s General Secretary, Isaac Bampoe Addo, has called on the Presidency to revoke Botchway’s appointment, insisting that the decision undermines neutrality within the civil service.

However, in a statement released on Friday, February 21, LGSWU made it clear that it would not be participating in the strike. The union cited an ongoing legal case related to the matter and stressed the importance of following due process.

“For these reasons and upon further consultations by the National Management Committee with all the regional councils, the Local Government Service Workers’ Union has taken a unanimous decision not to join the strike action,” the statement read.

As a result, LGSWU has instructed its members to remain at their posts and continue with their regular duties.

While the disagreement between CLOGSAG and the government continues, the LGSWU’s stance highlights a division within the public sector workforce over how best to address concerns about political interference in civil service appointments.
