Lands Minister Labels Illegal Miners as “Dangerous Terrorists”

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has issued a strong warning to illegal miners, popularly known as galamseyers, describing them as “dangerous terrorists” who are destroying Ghana’s environment and endangering millions of lives.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Thursday, April 3, the minister expressed deep concern over the devastating impact of illegal mining on Ghana’s water bodies and the environment.

“We can’t allow a few people to make money at the expense of millions of Ghanaians and kill us. We must now begin to see them as dangerous terrorists who are killing us,” Mr Buah stated.

The minister highlighted the severe pollution of water systems, revealing that turbidity levels in some areas have soared to between 5,000 and 12,000—far exceeding the acceptable limit of 500.

“It means we are drinking poison,” he cautioned, underscoring the urgent need for decisive action to protect public health and the environment.

The minister’s comments come amid mounting concerns over the impact of illegal mining, which has led to contaminated water sources, deforestation, and serious health risks in affected communities.

While condemning illegal miners, Mr Buah reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting responsible small-scale mining.

“If anybody wants to do genuine small-scale mining, this government is committed to guiding them, giving them licences, and guiding them on the path of doing small-scale mining in a more responsible and sustainable manner,” he assured.

The government has pledged to intensify its crackdown on illegal mining while promoting sustainable practices to preserve Ghana’s natural resources.

The fight against illegal mining has been a major priority for successive governments, with various military-led operations and task forces deployed to curb the menace.

However, the galamsey crisis remains a persistent challenge, causing irreversible environmental damage and threatening the livelihoods of millions of Ghanaians.

As authorities ramp up efforts to end illegal mining, the government is urging stakeholders, local communities, and traditional authorities to support the fight against galamsey and protect Ghana’s environment for future generations.
