The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has dismissed claims of internal friction within the party following President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to withdraw a private member’s bill seeking to abolish the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face on Tuesday, December 16, Mr Kwetey said differing views expressed by individual Members of Parliament should not be misconstrued as the official position of the party.
According to him, a position only becomes the party’s official stance when it is deliberated and agreed upon at the highest decision-making levels of the NDC.

“Individuals can have their own perspectives. A decision becomes a political decision if it is discussed at the highest level of the party, such as the political committee led by the president,” he explained.
Mr Kwetey stressed that comments made by MPs outside that framework reflect personal opinions and not the party’s position.
“Otherwise, whatever somebody might say in Parliament represents the person’s personal position, and that personal position is absolutely not the party’s position. It’s okay to have disagreement; it’s not a problem,” he added.
He further emphasised that the President, as leader of both the government and the party, ultimately articulates the NDC’s official position on major national issues.
“What the president states as the leader of the party represents that position. At the end of the day, the one who is in charge of the vehicle is the president,” Mr Kwetey said.
While reaffirming that party members are entitled to hold personal views, he noted that clarity is required to distinguish between individual opinions and official party policy.
Mr Kwetey’s comments come amid speculation that President Mahama’s instruction to Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga and Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor to withdraw the Bill had triggered internal disagreements within the NDC, claims he firmly rejected.
