The Paramount Chief of Keta, Togbui James Ocloo V, has voiced his disappointment over the unfulfilled promise by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to construct a port in Keta, citing the lack of progress on the project despite years of assurances.
Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV, Togbui Ocloo V expressed frustration with the slow pace of development. Though preliminary work on the Keta Port began in 2019, including the appointment of a director, construction has barely progressed beyond the foundation stage of office buildings.
The chief criticised the former president for failing to advance the project significantly and highlighted its potential to create jobs and drive economic growth for the people of Keta and the Volta Region.
“Former President John Agyekum Kufuor cut a sword at Keta here, and they said they were building a mini fishing port for us over here with some facilities. We waited and waited, and that government left power. Nothing was done,” Togbui Ocloo V lamented.
Togbui Ocloo V noted that traditional authorities have participated in several workshops and meetings with government officials to discuss the project.
However, tangible outcomes have remained elusive.
“My expectation was that work will happen much more than this one. We chiefs, we don’t play politics, but we must speak when promises are not fulfilled, especially when it affects the welfare of our people,” he stated.
The Paramount Chief called on President-elect John Dramani Mahama to make the completion of the Keta Port a priority for his administration.
“The port will create jobs and bring economic opportunities to our people. I urge the incoming administration to deliver on this important promise and ensure the project does not remain another unfulfilled dream,” Togbui Ocloo V added.
