Kenyan President Ruto Lauds Zoomlion for Transformative Waste Management Investments Across Africa

President of Kenya, Dr William Samoei Ruto, has commended Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), for its groundbreaking investments in state-of-the-art waste management facilities that are addressing sanitation challenges across Africa.

The Kenyan leader expressed his admiration during the official opening of the 2025 Kenya Devolution Conference (DevCon2025), held in Homa Bay County on Wednesday, August 13, after touring the Jospong Group’s Pavilion and Exhibition Booth.

President Ruto noted that Zoomlion’s innovations and operations in several African countries demonstrate how private sector investment can complement government efforts in solving pressing environmental and sanitation problems.

His remarks followed a briefing by the Executive Chairman of JGC, Dr Joseph Siaw Agyepong, who outlined how the Group’s subsidiaries—including the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP), Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP), Waste Landfills (WL), Medical Waste Services Limited (MWSL), Landfill Technologies Services, and the Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plant—are delivering technology-driven waste solutions.

“These waste management companies are not just providing services; they are offering technology-driven, scalable solutions that Africa urgently needs to tackle its growing waste crisis,” Dr Agyepong explained.

Later, addressing delegates at the conference, Dr Agyepong unveiled an ambitious blueprint to transform Kenya’s waste management system, with the potential to create more than 52,000 jobs annually.

He proposed a “clustering strategy” in which five counties would share one integrated waste facility, allowing for efficient management of the estimated 28,000 tonnes of waste generated daily by Kenya’s 57 million people.

The model, he said, could create:

  • 30,000 jobs in waste collection, transportation, and sweeping,
  • 21,000 jobs in plant operations, and
  • 1,800 jobs in green initiatives, data collection, and carbon market monitoring.

“With clustering operations into regional counties, Kenya can not only solve its waste challenges but also create thousands of decent jobs, just as we have done in Ghana,” Dr Agyepong emphasised to resounding applause.

He further stressed that there was no such thing as “waste”, only “misplaced resources”, urging African countries to embrace recycling and recovery as pathways to sustainability.

This year’s Devolution Conference, organised by the Council of Governors, attracted over 11,000 delegates, including all 47 county governors, members of the Senate, county assemblies, development partners, civil society, and the private sector.

Held under the theme “For the People, For Prosperity: Devolution as a Catalyst for Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice”, the four-day conference (August 12–15, 2025) examined how Kenya’s devolved governance can accelerate inclusion and equity.

The participation of Jospong Group—the first West African conglomerate to showcase at the Devolution Conference—was described as a significant milestone in strengthening Ghana–Kenya cooperation in waste management.

Dr Agyepong concluded his presentation with a two-minute video highlighting Zoomlion’s operations, drawing a standing ovation from delegates as the session ended.

“By 2027, Jospong will present clear evidence of plants installed across all participating countries,” he assured.

President Ruto’s endorsement of Zoomlion and Jospong Group underscores the growing recognition of Ghanaian innovation in addressing Africa’s sanitation and environmental challenges, while opening the door for stronger collaboration between Ghana and Kenya in building sustainable waste management systems.
