Keep the lights on, you’re in charge now – Krapa

Former Energy Minister Herbert Krapa has debunked warnings of an impending power crisis, challenging the newly sworn-in Mahama administration to prioritise effective management of Ghana’s energy sector.

Krapa’s remarks come in response to John Jinapor, a key figure on the NDC Transition Team, who claimed the country’s fuel reserves were critically low, risking imminent power outages.

Jinapor stated that Ghana’s current stock of fuel could sustain electricity generation for only five hours, raising fears of a return to ‘dumsor.’.

In a statement posted on social media, Krapa described Jinapor’s claims as exaggerated and unfounded.

“Load shedding does not ‘loom,’” Krapa said. “It occurs either due to technical failures or a lack of competent management. Mr. Jinapor’s remarks are clearly an attempt to deflect responsibility.”

Krapa pointed out that the Akufo-Addo administration had left sufficient fuel stocks for key power plants, including light crude oil for Cenpower and heavy fuel oil for AKSA.

He reassured Ghanaians that the previous government had laid a solid foundation for a stable electricity supply, asserting that any disruptions now would be the result of poor planning by the new administration.

Krapa stressed that it is now the responsibility of the Mahama-led government to ensure the smooth operation of the power sector.

“The incoming government must procure additional liquid fuel when needed to complement gas supply and maintain stability. This requires careful planning and competent management—something we successfully did for eight years,” he noted.

He added that Ghana’s energy sector requires proactive leadership rather than what he described as “needless finger-pointing.”

In his critique, Krapa urged the NDC government to avoid engaging in political blame games and instead focus on solutions to Ghana’s pressing energy challenges.

“Leadership means taking responsibility and solving problems. The NDC government must step up to the plate and deliver, just as we did even during tough times,” Krapa stated.
