Julius Debrah Confirms Death of Top 8 Government Officials in Adansi Helicopter Crash

Ghana has been plunged into mourning following confirmation that Defense Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed were among eight people killed in Wednesday’s catastrophic military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, addressing the nation at a sombre press conference, described the incident as “a national tragedy of unimaginable proportions” and announced that flags will fly at half-mast nationwide until further notice in honor of the deceased.

The ill-fated Ghana Air Force helicopter, which took off from Accra at 9:12 a.m. on August 6, 2025, was en route to Obuasi when it went off radar and later crashed at Adansi Brofeyedu in the Adansi Akrofuom District. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion before seeing flames engulf the aircraft. The wreckage was found burnt beyond recognition, with no visible signs of survivors.

Among the other lives lost were:

  • Alhaji Muniru Mohammed – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister for Food and Agriculture
  • Dr. Edward Omane Boamah- Minister for Defence
  • Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed – Minister for Environment
  • Dr. Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
  • Samuel Aboagye – Former NDC Parliamentary Candidate
  • Squadron Leader Peter Anala – Ghana Air Force
  • Flying Officer Twum Ampadu – Ghana Air Force
  • Sergeant Ernest Addo – Ghana Air Force

According to preliminary findings, the helicopter may have struck a tree before going down, though the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.

“This is not just a loss for the government, but a loss for the entire nation,” Mr. Debrah said, his voice heavy with emotion. “We grieve together as one people, and we will honor their service and memory.”

The Ghana Armed Forces has pledged full cooperation with investigators to determine the cause of the tragedy, which marks one of the deadliest aviation disasters in the country’s recent history.
