Jealous Lover Sets Girlfriend’s Room on Fire, Leaves Children Severely Burnt
A tragic case of jealousy turned into horror at Axim in the Western Region when a man, identified as Joseph Richard, allegedly set fire to the room of his girlfriend, Betty Herman, in a suspected act of revenge.
The incident, which occurred around 3 a.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2025, took a devastating turn as Betty’s two children—16-year-old Joseph Ben and 3-year-old Richlove Asiedua Yeboah—were trapped inside the burning room. Both children sustained severe burns and are currently fighting for their lives at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Eyewitnesses recount that Richard carried out the arson after Betty requested to end their relationship. His actions, described as premeditated, were allegedly aimed at harming not just Betty but her innocent children as well.

According to reports, neighbours acted swiftly upon seeing the raging fire, alerting firefighters and the police, who intervened in time to prevent further casualties. Though the children were rescued, their injuries remain critical.
Residents who gathered at the scene expressed their outrage, describing the act as heartless and unforgivable. They noted that Richard fled after setting the room ablaze, but crucial evidence—including his clothes and a gallon suspected to have contained fuel—was recovered at the crime scene.
Community members are calling on law enforcement authorities to intensify efforts to apprehend Richard and ensure he faces the full rigours of the law.
The police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect as investigations continue into the horrifying attack.
