The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Jigawa State Command, has successfully rescued 10 suspected victims of human trafficking.
This was disclosed by the NIS Comptroller, Mr. Tahir Musa, during a news briefing in Dutse on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
According to Musa, the victims were intercepted on Sunday in the Tsamiyar Kwance area, Babura Local Government Area of the state. The operation, conducted by the command’s Operation Salama team, took place at approximately 1:00 p.m. as the victims were en route to the Niger Republic and subsequently to Europe.
The rescued individuals, aged between 21 and 30, comprised two males and eight females. Musa further revealed their states of origin: six victims were from Ogun State, two from Ondo State, one from Oyo State, and one from Imo State.
“Upon their interception at Tsamiyar Kwance and subsequent profiling and interrogation, they confessed to us that they were moved from different locations to Kano State, then to Babura on their way to Niger Republic en route to Tripoli in Libya,” Musa stated.
The victims reportedly intended to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe from Libya.
Musa emphasised the need for parents to guide their children and protect them from being lured by false promises of a better life abroad.
He also credited the NIS Comptroller-General, Mrs. Kemi Nandap, for her leadership and support, which, along with the backing of the Jigawa State government, has strengthened efforts to combat irregular migration in the region.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the rescued victims have been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further actions.
