‘If I Tell You I Am Impressed With Otto Addo, Then It Means I Do Not Know My Job’ – Sports Minister Kofi Adams
Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams has voiced strong concerns about the Black Stars’ shaky performances in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, arguing that head coach Otto Addo’s work does not merit commendation at this point.
The Black Stars, four-time African champions, currently sit at the top of Group I with 19 points after eight matches, following a crucial but narrow 1-0 victory over Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday night. That result momentarily lifted the mood of Ghanaians, but it came only days after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Chad, a match that drew heavy criticism from fans, pundits, and football commentators.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Adams cautioned against complacency, warning that Ghana is yet to secure qualification for the global tournament.

“Very soon, AFCON is going to start in Morocco. Are we going to be part of it? “No, we will watch on TV,” he lamented, pointing to Ghana’s failure to qualify for the continental competition. “We have not even qualified for the World Cup yet. We still need a win and at least a draw to comfortably say that, as far as our group is concerned, nobody can overtake us.”
He stressed that while topping the group is important, the team’s lack of consistency exposes worrying gaps in preparation and tactical discipline.
Adams was particularly critical of coach Otto Addo, insisting that his frequent mistakes cannot be brushed aside simply because the team remains in a favourable position.
“If I tell you I am impressed, then it means I do not know my job. “I am not,” the Sports Minister said bluntly. “There is a lot of room for improvement. Even when you meet the coach himself, he admits that he got things wrong and takes responsibility. But the question is, for how long will you continue to take blame for wrong decisions?”
His remarks add to the growing debate about whether Addo is the right man to lead the Black Stars to the 2026 World Cup and beyond.
The Black Stars’ mixed performances have fuelled frustration among supporters, many of whom remain unconvinced by the team’s style of play and reliance on narrow wins against weaker opponents. Football analysts have also pointed to Ghana’s struggles in creating goal-scoring opportunities, a recurring problem that has haunted the team in recent campaigns.
Some have warned that unless drastic improvements are made, Ghana risks repeating the disappointments of recent tournaments, where the team failed to meet expectations despite promising starts.
With two matches left in the qualifiers, Ghana needs at least four points to book a ticket to the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. While that target appears achievable on paper, the team’s unpredictable form has left many sceptical.
For Minister Adams, the onus lies squarely on Otto Addo to prove his critics wrong by tightening his tactical approach, instilling discipline in the squad, and ensuring Ghana qualifies without further drama.
“The responsibility is on the coach to show he has learnt from these mistakes,” Adams concluded. “Ghanaians want results, not excuses.”
