If Care Is Not Taken, Mortuaries Will Be Full – Mortuary Workers Warn Amid Nurses Strike

The President of the Mortuaries Association of Ghana, Richard Kofi Jordan, has warned that if immediate steps are not taken to resolve the impasse between government and striking nurses and midwives, mortuaries across the country risk being overwhelmed due to a growing number of deaths.

In a stark warning that underscores the ripple effect of the ongoing health sector crisis, the President of the Mortuaries Association of Ghana, Richard Kofi Jordan, says mortuary facilities nationwide could soon exceed capacity if the strike action by nurses and midwives proceeds as planned.

Speaking in a phone interview with Nana Kay on Hot FM’s Morning Drive, Mr. Jordan revealed that mortuaries are already seeing an uptick in the number of bodies being brought in, attributing the rise to reduced care in hospitals due to the absence of nurses and midwives.

“Since the strike began, the number of deaths has increased. If care is not taken, mortuaries in Ghana will be full,” he said.

This development comes after the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) announced on May 28 that more than 128,000 of its members are preparing to withdraw their services nationwide. The industrial action stems from the government’s failure to implement a collective agreement signed over a year ago.

GRNMA President Perpetual Ofori Ampofo expressed deep frustration, explaining that even after a legal challenge to the agreement was resolved in January 2025, the government has continued to stall its implementation despite multiple engagements.

“The delay not only disrespects our profession but also puts lives at risk,” she said.

Mr Jordan’s caution adds to the growing concern among health professionals and civil society about the potential humanitarian crisis the strike could trigger.

He urged the government to take swift, meaningful action before hospitals become overwhelmed and mortuaries overflow.

“The health of Ghanaians is non-negotiable. We need immediate solutions before this spirals out of control,” he added.
