“I have not touched Gyakye Quayson’s case because he wants to prove his innocence” – A-G

The Attorney-General (A-G) and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has announced that he will not be reviewing the ongoing criminal case against the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson.

The decision, he stated, was influenced by the position taken by Mr. Quayson’s legal counsel, Tsatsu Tsikata, who expressed his client’s willingness to fight the case and prove his innocence in court.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, February 12, Dr. Ayine clarified his stance, emphasising that he respects Mr. Quayson’s legal strategy and sees no reason to intervene.

“Lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata told me that he wants to soldier on and prove the innocence of his client. I respect that decision,” Dr. Ayine remarked.

Mr. James Gyakye Quayson is currently facing trial on charges of forgery and perjury related to allegations that he misrepresented his Canadian citizenship status ahead of the 2020 parliamentary elections. The charges against him include:

  1. Forgery of passport or travel certificate
  2. Knowingly making a false statutory declaration
  3. Perjury
  4. False declaration for office

The MP has pleaded not guilty to all five counts and maintains that he has done nothing wrong. The case, which has been a subject of political and legal debate, continues to proceed through the courts.

Dr. Ayine also used the press briefing to dismiss claims that his recent decisions regarding criminal cases initiated under the previous administration were politically motivated. He insisted that his actions have been guided solely by legal, ethical, and professional principles.

“For ethical and professional reasons, I could not in good conscience continue to prosecute some of the cases,” he stated.

He further elaborated that some of the cases lacked sufficient evidence, while others had fundamental flaws in their charges, making successful prosecution unlikely.

With the Attorney-General opting not to review or discontinue the case against Mr. Quayson, the legal battle over the MP’s alleged misrepresentation remains active. As the case proceeds, both the prosecution and defence will have the opportunity to present their arguments before the court.

The outcome of the trial is expected to have significant legal and political implications, particularly given Mr. Quayson’s role as a sitting Member of Parliament. Observers will be closely monitoring developments as the judiciary navigates this high-profile case.
