The family of Suzi Adwoa Penamang, a 16-year-old student at the Seventh Day Adventist Senior High School in Bantama, Ashanti Region, is making an emotional appeal to the public for urgent financial help after their daughter was left on the verge of blindness.
Suzi’s life took a terrifying turn on Friday, April 4, 2025, when she was hit in the eye by a stray bullet during an altercation on campus. The bullet was fired by a fellow student, Bernard Amoabeng, during a heated argument with peers over whether the firearm he carried was real. In a moment of recklessness, Bernard discharged the weapon, with the bullet striking Suzi, who was an innocent bystander.
She was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and treated for the injury. Although she has since been discharged, her condition remains fragile and life-altering. Doctors say she risks going completely blind in the affected eye without urgent medical intervention.

Speaking to reporters, Suzi’s mother, Afia Comfort, made a tearful appeal to Ghanaians, political leaders, and humanitarians.
“All I need from Ghanaians is to help me get back the eye of my daughter,” she said, struggling to hold back tears.
“I beg you, help me operate on the eye of my daughter. I don’t have any help from anywhere. The MPs, President Mahama, please come to my aid. My daughter cannot sleep or eat. I beg you, help me.”
The mother revealed that since the incident, Suzi has not been herself—she barely speaks, she cries often, and she’s battling physical pain and emotional trauma.
This shocking event has reignited public concern over the growing indiscipline and safety lapses in Ghanaian schools. Citizens, civil society groups, and education stakeholders are demanding:
- Urgent investigations into how a student accessed a firearm
- Improved school security and monitoring systems
- National dialogue on youth violence and conflict resolution in schools
Social media has exploded with anger, with many calling for justice for Suzi and strong disciplinary action against Bernard and anyone who may have aided him.
The Penamang family is now racing against time to raise funds for Suzi’s medical treatment. Specialists have advised that she may need surgery either locally or abroad, and the costs are beyond what the family can afford.
Friends and sympathisers are mobilising, and there are calls for government intervention, as well as support from private donors, NGOs, and health-focused charities.
“We’re not asking for much. Just a chance for Suzi to see again, to finish her education, and to dream like every child should,” her uncle added.
