The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has confirmed the dismissal of Dr Adam Atiku, Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), with immediate effect, citing broader management issues and a recent controversial incident that resulted in a patient’s death.
Speaking on Joy FM’s NewsNight on Tuesday, April 22, the minister stated unequivocally that Dr Atiku had been relieved of his duties, and a formal termination letter had already been issued.
“As I speak to you now, we have thanked him for the services he rendered at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. We believe it is time for someone else to continue as CEO. He has been sacked with immediate effect,” Akandoh said.

The decision follows a public uproar over a patient’s death at the hospital on Sunday, which sparked allegations of negligence and inadequate emergency care. The health minister personally visited the hospital on Tuesday to assess the situation.
He recounted a troubling encounter with one of the doctors who explained the incident in a manner the minister described as “insensitive”.
“He did not seem to grasp the seriousness of the issue,” Mr Akandoh said, adding, “When life is lost, it’s very, very important, and we must all show concern, especially when people believe that it is avoidable or preventable.”
A committee has been established to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the death.
Mr Akandoh clarified that Dr Atiku’s removal was not solely due to the incident but part of a broader loss of confidence in his leadership.
“Relieving him of his position is not only because of the incident that happened on Sunday,” the minister noted. “The appointing authority owes nobody any explanation for hiring or firing an employee.”
He criticised the hospital’s resource management, pointing out that critical government-supplied equipment was either unmaintained or left idle.
“They couldn’t maintain; they couldn’t replace. Yet they are expecting the government to bring money to come and maintain or replace,” Akandoh said in frustration.
The Ministry of Health is yet to announce who will replace Dr Atiku. In the meantime, the committee’s probe into the Sunday incident and a general review of the hospital’s operations are expected to guide the way forward.
