Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced the completion of the recruitment of 13,500 nurses and midwives, describing it as a major step toward stabilising Ghana’s health workforce and boosting frontline healthcare delivery.
Speaking at the GRNMA 19th Biennial Conference in Tamale, the minister said the massive recruitment drive was aligned with the government’s broader agenda to expand access to quality health services under the Free Primary Healthcare and Mahama Cares programmes.
Addressing concerns raised by newly engaged health workers about delays in salary payments, Mr Akandoh assured that all arrears would be settled before the end of the month.

“We have completed the recruitment process, and every newly employed nurse and midwife who has experienced salary delays will be paid before the month ends,” he confirmed.
The minister also disclosed that the government is considering the newly negotiated Conditions of Service for nurses and midwives for inclusion in the 2026 national budget, signalling renewed commitment to improving the welfare of health professionals.
He highlighted that promotions within the nursing and midwifery sectors have now been fully regularised, following years of delays attributed to limited vacancies.
Mr Akandoh urged stronger cooperation between the Ministry of Health, labour organisations, and the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to address persistent challenges such as deployment difficulties, specialist training needs, and overall workforce optimisation.
He underscored that effective partnerships remain central to achieving sustainable improvements in healthcare delivery across the country.
