The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has instructed the University of Ghana to reduce its residential facility fees from GHC 3,000 to GHC 2,500 for both incoming and continuing students.
This directive was issued during a meeting on February 6, 2025, with the university’s management team, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Amfo, as well as representatives from the Student Representative Council (SRC), at the Ministry’s office in Accra.
Minister Iddrisu emphasised the need for affordability and fair pricing, urging the university to lower the fees by 25 percent.
He also requested that the university engage with the SRC on any future fee-related announcements to ensure transparency and proper communication with the student body.
“I have asked the Vice Chancellor to reduce the residential facility fees by 25 percent, and I have subsequently asked her to engage you (SRC) in the future on any fee announcement,” said Iddrisu.
In response, Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Amfo assured the minister that the university would comply with the directive. “We have listened to you, our minister, and also our students, and we can afford to reduce it by 25 percent across the board,” she said. “Going forward, there will be adequate student engagement.”
Maradona Adjei Yeboah, President of the SRC, welcomed the reduction but urged that students who had already paid the higher fees should be refunded. “We are thankful for the reduction; at least it will reduce some sort of burden from our parents,” he said. “However, there should be a refund for those who have already paid.”
University management confirmed that around 80 percent of students had already paid their residential facility fees at the original rate of GHC 3,000.
The call for refunds has sparked discussions on how the university will manage this process, especially given the large number of students involved.
This decision comes as part of ongoing efforts to address student concerns about the increasing costs of education and accommodation, and it marks a significant step toward improving communication and engagement between the university administration and students.
