Unidentified gunmen have ambushed a vehicle travelling from Kulungugu to the Bawku township, despite being under military escort.
The vehicle, with the registration number GA 4454-09, was targeted in an attack that occurred in the volatile Bawku area. Eyewitnesses reported that the shooting was intense, though no casualties have been confirmed so far.
The assailants appeared undeterred by the presence of military officers, continuing their attack even with the security detail. The Bawku area has remained unstable for some time, despite various efforts to restore peace, including the imposition of a dawn-to-dusk curfew.
In an attempt to address the ongoing unrest, President John Mahama visited Bawku and Nalerigu on January 16, 2025, as part of his efforts to find lasting solutions to the conflict in the region.
