GRIDCo Begins Investigation After Nationwide Power System Disturbance Disrupts Electricity Supply

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has launched a comprehensive technical investigation following a major power system disturbance that occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, July 29, 2026, resulting in widespread electricity outages across parts of the country.

According to GRIDCo, the incident occurred at approximately 3:11 a.m., when the National Interconnected Transmission System experienced a disturbance that caused the simultaneous tripping of several electricity-generating plants, leading to an interruption in power supply.

In a statement issued by its Corporate Communications Section, GRIDCo assured the public that system restoration efforts are already underway, with engineers and system operators working around the clock alongside key power sector stakeholders to restore electricity as quickly and safely as possible.

The company said it has activated its established power system restoration procedures to minimise the impact of the outage while ensuring the integrity and safety of the national grid.

GRIDCo also announced that a detailed technical investigation has commenced to establish the exact cause of the system disturbance.

The company apologised to the public for the inconvenience caused by the outage and expressed appreciation for the patience and understanding of affected customers.

"We remain fully committed to restoring supply to all affected customers as quickly and safely as possible and will provide further updates as more information becomes available," the statement said.

GRIDCo indicated that additional information on the incident and the restoration process will be communicated to the public as investigations progress.
