The Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) has reassured the public that there will be no nationwide power outages, popularly known as “dumsor,” during the ongoing maintenance work by the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo). The maintenance, which began on February 5, is scheduled to be completed by March 2, 2025.
In a joint statement, GRIDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd. (ECG) confirmed that the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has put measures in place to mitigate potential disruptions. One key step has been securing substantial volumes of liquid fuel to power critical plants in Tema, ensuring a steady electricity supply throughout the maintenance period.
Speaking to Citi Business News, Nana Amoasi VII, Executive Director of the Institute of Energy Security (IES), praised the government’s decision to stockpile liquid fuel reserves ahead of the maintenance exercise.
“The postponement of the maintenance program gave the government ample time to build up reserves. If the national gas supply to power plants in the Eastern enclave is disrupted, there will be enough liquid fuel to keep the plants running,” Amoasi stated.
He further noted that power plants such as Asogli and those within the Tema enclave will remain unaffected, ensuring no reduction in Ghana’s overall power generation capacity.
“This will allow the government to proceed with confidence, avoiding criticism, and ensuring consumers enjoy a stable and reliable electricity supply,” he added.
GRIDCo has reiterated its commitment to working closely with key stakeholders, including ECG and the Volta River Authority (VRA), to ensure that all contingency plans are effectively implemented. The company assured the public that despite the ongoing maintenance by WAPCo, power distribution will not be compromised.
With these measures in place, consumers can expect uninterrupted electricity supply throughout the maintenance period, reinforcing the government’s efforts to ensure energy stability in the country.
