The Government of Ghana is set to introduce a new bill in Parliament that will change the names of C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) and several other public universities across the country.
The disclosure was made by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu during the swearing-in ceremony of the Governing Council of CKT-UTAS in Accra.
“Extensive consultations have been held with members of the academic community, traditional leaders, alumni bodies, student representatives, and civil society organisations. Consequently, it is likely that the name ‘C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences’ will be changed—potentially in line with the original founding vision,” the minister stated.

CKT-UTAS, established in 2021, has faced several infrastructural challenges that have hindered its academic progress. Its naming has also remained controversial, with ongoing opposition from certain stakeholder groups who argue the name does not reflect the university’s mission or regional identity.
The education minister clarified that the proposed bill is part of a broader policy review targeting public universities that were established or renamed during the tenure of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
“This is not to suggest that such individuals are unworthy of recognition,” Iddrisu said, referring to C.K. Tedam and other figures. “Rather, the renaming is being proposed to ensure alignment with the founding principles and historical identities of these institutions.”
