Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has announced a comprehensive retooling of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in 2026, pledging the provision of 100 new fire tenders and a full range of modern firefighting equipment to strengthen emergency response capabilities nationwide.
Presenting the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy to Parliament, Dr Forson said the move forms part of the government’s broader commitment to public safety and national resilience, acknowledging that the Fire Service has for years been hampered by inadequate tools and outdated equipment.
According to him, the current state of the GNFS threatens both lives and property, making urgent intervention non-negotiable. “Mr Speaker, the Ghana National Fire Service lacks basic equipment to enable them to function effectively. Government will therefore retool the Service with 100 fire tenders and assorted fire equipment,” he declared.

Dr Forson added that the government will also partner with the private sector to procure high-rise fire equipment, a major boost for urban centres struggling with increasing numbers of multi-storey buildings. This upgrade is expected to significantly enhance the service’s ability to respond to complex fire outbreaks, especially in commercial hubs and densely populated cities.
The announcement forms part of a broader national renewal agenda outlined in the 2026 budget — an agenda that includes the construction of new regional hospitals, completion of Agenda 111 facilities, and strategic investments in health infrastructure, security, and emergency services.
The finance minister stressed that protecting lives is a core pillar of Ghana’s development pathway. The retooling of the Fire Service, he noted, is not merely an equipment upgrade but a commitment to a safer Ghana.
