Gov’t Set One Month Roadmap For Privatisation Of ECG
The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has inaugurated a 7-member technical committee tasked with creating a comprehensive roadmap for the privatisation of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The committee, which comprises energy experts and key industry stakeholders, has been given a month to complete its work, focusing on strategies to transition ECG to private sector management. This initiative aims to enhance efficiency and improve service delivery within Ghana’s power distribution sector.
Speaking to the media after the inauguration, Mr. Jinapor reassured the public that the government is not selling ECG but rather involving the private sector to bolster the company’s operations.
“Let me assure the nation that we have not decided to sell ECG. Ours is to ensure that we get the private sector involved, with an emphasis on local participation,” he explained.
Mr. Jinapor emphasised the importance of transparency and inclusivity, urging the committee to engage stakeholders, including workers, unions, and consumers.
“We want this to be done in a transparent, effective, and responsible way. The committee is supposed to consult all stakeholders and complete this exercise within one month. The energy sector is bleeding, and if nothing is done in the shortest possible time, it will collapse,” he added.
The directive comes amidst increasing challenges in the energy sector, with calls for innovative solutions to address inefficiencies and financial constraints.
