The Government of Ghana has outlined a three-day program of national mourning to honor the eight individuals who perished in the tragic military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, in the Ashanti Region.
The official mourning period, which spans from Thursday, August 7, to Saturday, August 9, is intended to give the public an opportunity to express condolences, reflect on the tragedy, and celebrate the lives of the departed.
In a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, the government said the commemorative events will begin Thursday afternoon with a public laying of flowers and lighting of candles at the Ceremonial Garden in front of the Presidency, beginning at 1:00 PM.

“Members of the public, families, and friends are respectfully invited to participate,” the statement read.
The flower-laying and candle-lighting will continue into Friday, August 8, allowing more Ghanaians to participate in honoring the fallen heroes.
The mourning period will culminate in a solemn “Evening of Reflections and Memorials” at the Forecourt of the State House on Saturday, August 9, at 5:00 PM. This final event is expected to draw a cross-section of Ghanaians—dignitaries, civil society leaders, families, and ordinary citizens—united in remembrance of the departed.
“These three days offer our nation a vital opportunity to collectively mourn and reflect on the profound loss we have experienced,” the government emphasized.
The eight victims include:
- Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
- Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology
- Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, former Minister for Agriculture and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
- Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chair of the NDC
- Mr. Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate
- Squadron Leader Peter Anala,
- Flying Officer Twum Ampadu,
- Sergeant Ernest Addo
The government has pledged to release further details about the state funeral and other arrangements in due course through official channels.
