Gov't Describes One Million Coders Programme as Professional Specialisation for Graduates

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has described the One Million Coders Programme as a form of professional specialisation that helps university graduates acquire practical skills needed in the workplace.

He said academic qualifications remained important but did not always provide all the specialised digital competencies employers expected from graduates.

Speaking during a visit to the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in the Volta Region, Hon. Sam George said the programme was intended to bridge that gap by offering training tailored to industry needs.

“Consider the One Million Coders as a post-graduate programme, that gives you a specialisation course,” he said.

The Minister compared the programme to professional courses pursued by graduates after completing degrees in fields such as law and business, explaining that it was designed to provide additional competencies for professional practice.

He said students from different academic backgrounds could benefit from digital training, including those studying medicine, nursing, law, engineering, teaching and agriculture.

Sam George cited the experience of a graduate from Ho Technical University who enrolled in the programme after discovering that he needed more specialised skills to improve his prospects in the job market.

According to the minister, the graduate completed one course and had moved on to a second within less than four months.

He said the experience demonstrated how structured digital training could help graduates identify and develop skills beyond their initial academic preparation.

Sam George welcomed UHAS’s plans to work with the Ministry on integrating the programme into its curriculum, adding that students should acquire relevant competencies before completing their studies.

The programme focuses on equipping participants with practical skills that complement their academic backgrounds and prepare them for an increasingly digital economy.

The comments were made during the Ministry’s two-day working tour of the Volta Region with GIFEC to assess One Million Coders Programme centres and rural telephony sites.
