Government to Announce Definitive Position on Bawku Mediation Report Within 24 Hours – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has assured that the government will, within 24 hours, take a clear and definitive position on the mediation report on the long-standing Bawku conflict, as efforts intensify to consolidate peace and advance reconciliation between the feuding factions.

The President gave the assurance on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at the Presidency after receiving a comprehensive report on the mediation process from the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The Asantehene was earlier this year tasked by the President to lead dialogue aimed at resolving the protracted chieftaincy dispute in the conflict-prone Bawku municipality.

“I’m pleased that Otumfuo’s mediation has come to an end, and now he has presented a report, and I can assure him that the government will look at this report, and within the next 24 hours the government will issue a statement on its definitive position on the report,” President Mahama stated.

He described the submission of the report as a critical milestone in the peace process, noting that while dialogue had been necessary to calm tensions, the focus must now shift toward healing, unity, and reconciliation among affected communities.

According to President Mahama, the next phase of the process must prioritise rebuilding relationships between the Kusasi and Mamprusi people, who have borne the brunt of decades of violence and insecurity.

“The next leg of the journey is to reconcile our brothers from both sides,” he said, stressing the need for sustained engagement and mutual understanding to ensure that peace in Bawku is durable and not temporary.

In presenting the report, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasised that the process he led was strictly a mediation exercise and not an arbitration. He explained that the approach was deliberately chosen to encourage voluntary participation, openness, and compromise among the parties involved.

The Asantehene noted that all stakeholders willingly submitted themselves to the mediation process and should, therefore, be bound by its outcomes. He stressed that the objective was not to declare winners or losers but to establish the facts, clarify historical and legal positions, and build consensus in the supreme interest of peace and national stability.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was appointed by President Mahama earlier in 2025 to spearhead the mediation efforts following renewed tensions in the area. The process formally began in April with separate consultations with representatives of the Kusasi and Mamprusi factions. Although the talks were briefly suspended, they later resumed in May and contributed significantly to a period of relative calm in the municipality.

President Mahama expressed gratitude to the Asantehene for his leadership, patience, and commitment to national peace, describing his role as pivotal in creating space for dialogue and understanding. He assured him that the government would act promptly and responsibly on the recommendations contained in the report.

The anticipated government statement is expected to outline the state’s next steps, including mechanisms to support reconciliation, rebuild trust between the factions, strengthen security, and prevent any relapse into violence in Bawku.

As the nation awaits the government’s response, the presentation of the mediation report is widely seen as a turning point in efforts to bring lasting peace to one of Ghana’s most enduring chieftaincy conflicts.
