GHS Announces Plans to Reactivate Liver-Hepatitis Fund
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced the reactivation of the dormant Ghana Liver-Hepatitis Fund to bridge critical funding gaps in the country’s efforts to eliminate viral hepatitis.
The announcement was made during the 2025 World Hepatitis Day commemoration in Accra, where Deputy Director of GHS, Caroline Amissah Reindorf, speaking on behalf of Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, described the move as timely and strategic.
“I am delighted that the GHS has taken the initiative to reactivate the Ghana Liver-Hepatitis Fund. This will complement government resources to ensure seamless and integrated hepatitis services nationwide,” she stated.

The revival of the fund comes at a time when international partner support is dwindling and new streams of financing remain elusive. Ms. Reindof stressed the importance of focusing on vulnerable populations—especially newborns and children—by ensuring hepatitis B vaccinations are administered within 24 hours of birth to prevent mother-to-child transmission.
“Chronically infected individuals face a four-to-five-times higher risk of developing cancer than those who smoke daily. Yet, hepatitis is preventable, curable, and treatable, with treatment reducing cancer risk by over 80%,” she said, urging early testing and treatment.
This year’s World Hepatitis Day, marked under the theme “Let’s Break It Down,” called for removing systemic barriers to hepatitis diagnosis, treatment, and care—especially in pursuit of Ghana’s universal health coverage targets by 2030.
WHO Country Representative Dr. Fiona Braka reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to helping Ghana scale up affordable testing and treatment options. “We urge all stakeholders, including CSOs and the government, to work together to mobilize resources to eliminate this epidemic,” she said.

Atsu Seake-Kwawu, program manager for the National Viral Hepatitis Control Program, also assured the public that Ghana’s progress against hepatitis would not be derailed by financial challenges.

He highlighted ongoing support from initiatives like the MahamaCares policy, which continues to enhance healthcare access nationwide.
