Ghana@69: ‘Independence Gave Us Freedom, But Demands Responsibility’ – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has called for renewed discipline and accountability in Ghana’s national life, warning that the country’s independence must be matched with integrity, responsible leadership and the protection of public resources.

Addressing the nation during the Ghana Independence Day celebrations on Friday, March 6, the president said the process of resetting the country must go beyond economic reforms to include a transformation in national values and civic responsibility.

Speaking under the theme “Building Prosperity, Inspiring Hope”, President Mahama urged both citizens and leaders to recommit themselves to the principles of accountability and shared national duty.

“But resetting Ghana goes beyond just the numbers. It involves resetting our values, our expectations, and the social contract that exists between leaders and citizens,” he stated.

The president also delivered a strong warning against corruption, describing it as a destructive force that undermines national development and deprives citizens of essential services.

“Corruption is a cancer that erodes the very foundation of our nation. Every cedi that is stolen from the public purse represents a classroom that is robbed of textbooks. It represents a hospital that will go without medicine. It represents a road that will be left uncompleted. And it represents a young graduate that will be denied opportunity,” he said.

President Mahama assured Ghanaians that his administration is prepared to take decisive steps to curb corruption by strengthening state institutions and protecting anti-corruption bodies from political interference.

“Independence granted us freedom, but freedom demands responsibility. We need to re-establish discipline in our national life, discipline in how we manage public resources,” President Mahama said.
