The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has announced that Ghana has successfully recovered more than $15 million from a sophisticated international online crime network that defrauded citizens through cryptocurrency-related schemes.
Dr Ayine disclosed the breakthrough while addressing the public at the Government’s Accountability Series on Thursday, describing the recovery as a major milestone in the country’s fight against transnational cybercrime.
According to him, the operation was led by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in collaboration with other investigative agencies, using Ghana’s existing legal framework to trace, freeze and recover digital assets concealed across foreign jurisdictions.

“EOCO successfully used our local laws to freeze and recover virtual assets hidden in foreign jurisdictions. On November 19, 2025, Zodia Custody converted the crypto assets of the criminal enterprise and deposited $15,191,730.13 into the EOCO exhibit account,” Dr Ayine revealed.
He explained that the criminal network deliberately targeted Ghanaians, exploiting digital platforms and laundering the illicit proceeds through cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and USDT, making detection and recovery particularly complex.
Dr Ayine hailed the recovery as a significant victory for law enforcement and financial regulators, stressing that the successful retrieval of the funds demonstrates Ghana’s growing capacity to confront sophisticated cyber-enabled crimes.
“This is a clear indication that millions of funds looted out of the country can be tracked, frozen and returned to our motherland,” he stated.
The Attorney-General further assured the public that efforts are underway to identify and compensate victims of the fraud, noting that the recovered funds would be handled in accordance with the law.
He added that the achievement reflects the government’s broader commitment to protecting citizens, strengthening enforcement within the financial and digital sectors, and ensuring accountability under the rule of law.
The recovery comes amid rising concerns over cryptocurrency-related fraud globally and reinforces Ghana’s resolve to work with both local and international partners to clamp down on organised cybercrime networks.
