Ghana Records 91% Completion Rate for Google-Supported Coding Courses — Sam George
Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, says Ghana has recorded a 91 per cent completion rate for Google-supported courses under the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP), significantly exceeding the reported global completion rate of 42 per cent.

Mr George attributed the performance partly to the participation of institutional learners, particularly university students, who are encouraged or required by their institutions to complete the courses.

Speaking to journalists after a two-day tour of OMCP centres and rural telephony sites in the Volta Region, he said the country’s performance demonstrated the value of structured participation in digital skills training.

“Across the world, Google has a completion rate of 42%. In Ghana, our completion rate is 91%, more than double the global rate of completion on Google,” he said.

According to the minister, Google has supported the programme with 100,000 certificates, while Ghana’s implementation has attracted international attention.

He said he had visited Google’s campus in September, where Ghana was cited as an example for other countries in which the company operates.

However, Hon. Sam George noted that some learners at community-based centres had yet to complete their courses because they were not necessarily subject to the same institutional requirements as university students.

He urged participants to complete their training to ensure that the programme delivers value for the resources invested.

The One Million Coders Programme is part of the government’s broader effort to equip Ghanaians with digital skills relevant to employment, entrepreneurship and the changing technology landscape.

Hon Samuel Nartey George encouraged young people and other interested citizens to register through www.1millioncoders.gov.gh or access training through available learning centres.
