Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), in partnership with the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources and the Water Resources Commission, commemorated World Water Day at the forecourt of Ghana Water Ltd. The event focused on raising awareness about water conservation, efficiency, and sustainable water management practices.
Speaking at the event, the Acting Managing Director of GWCL urged citizens to embrace responsible water usage by adopting water-efficient appliances and turning off taps when not in use. He also encouraged businesses to implement water-saving processes to reduce wastage. Additionally, he called on policymakers to introduce and enforce stricter regulations to protect water sources and enhance water infrastructure development.
“Our water bodies continue to face severe pollution, forcing us to use more expensive chemicals like Pulley Electrolux for water treatment,” he stated. He noted that climate change has worsened the situation, causing unpredictable rainfall patterns and prolonged dry seasons, which negatively impact the availability of water in reservoirs and rivers.

The Acting Managing Director also addressed the issue of water loss, citing high levels of leakages and illegal connections as major concerns. “By December 2024, our revenue water was 52%, meaning only 48% of the water produced actually reaches consumers. The rest is lost within the system,” he explained.
To mitigate these challenges, GWCL is undertaking various initiatives, including increasing water production capacity through the establishment of new treatment plants and upgrading existing infrastructure. The company is also investing in modern technologies such as leak detection systems, smart meters, and pipeline rehabilitation to enhance efficiency and reduce water loss.
Furthermore, he announced GWCL’s collaboration with government agencies to enforce stricter regulations against illegal mining and industrial waste disposal, which significantly contribute to water pollution. He emphasised the importance of public education campaigns in fostering responsible water use and environmental conservation.
He reassured consumers that GWCL is committed to improving water supply and ensuring sustainable management practices to safeguard the country’s water resources for future generations.
