The Government of Ghana has issued a strong condemnation of the unfolding military coup in Guinea-Bissau, describing the action as a “direct assault on democracy” and a grave attempt to overturn the will of the people.
In a sharply worded statement released on Wednesday, November 26, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Ghana is “profoundly concerned” about the military takeover, which erupted barely days after the West African nation held peaceful presidential and legislative elections on November 23.
According to the statement, the coup has “brazenly disrupted” Guinea-Bissau’s electoral process and obstructed the expected announcement of results scheduled for November 27, thereby derailing the country’s democratic progress.

Ghana is urging the military leaders in Bissau to immediately restore constitutional governance and allow legally recognised processes to address any electoral disputes.
The government emphasised that disagreements arising from an election must be addressed through peaceful, transparent, and lawful mechanisms — not through violence or force.
The Ministry also called for the full protection of civilians, foreign nationals, and particularly the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission currently stationed in Guinea-Bissau.
The statement stressed that the observers’ safety and secure passage “must be guaranteed without delay” as tensions continue to escalate.
Amid uncertainty in Bissau, Ghana appealed to the citizens of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm and refrain from actions that could worsen the crisis.
The government reiterated its unwavering support for ECOWAS and the African Union, noting that both bodies are coordinating a regional response consistent with long-standing democratic and governance protocols.
